Strong Storms Over Urbana!

The below images are of Mamantus clouds over my apartment yesterday evening. These are puffy marshmallow like clouds that are not very common. They usually form out in front of very powerful storms(usually on the anvil of supercells). They are the only cloud formed by falling air! The storm that accompanied these clouds followed about :20 minutes after these pics were taken and was probably one of the last powerful storms in the midwest that i will see before i move out to LA.

I had my iphone on an armband recording part of my ride yesterday. Hit about 45 mph while riding. my average speed was around 30mph. i had a massive tail wind, it was great! I had to take 2 high speed jumps over some ditches that came up on me faster than i could stop. Both wheels never went above 4 inches off the ground and were probably closer to around 1 inch off the ground to clear the jumps.

this is also the very first video i have ever taken while riding!

I was carried into the air a number of times today! I also snapped two 150-200 pound kite lines from pulling so hard on the kite. they broke about 8 times during our flying today!

The below image is of Xiao Loam Bao Tzu. I found this great dumpling place in Pasadena that made some of the best bao i have ever had outside of china! The place specializes in making Bao, and you can watch them make it fresh in the kitchen!

The Bao place we went to was very popular so there was about a 40 minute wait for our table. In the meantime we went to a neighboring store which had a room full of these stuffed animal grabber machines. Since everything was pink and supposed to look cute and adorable i felt this picture of me in here would be very fitting! hahaha

In the mornings i would go for a run in Griffith Park. I ran up to the top of Mount Lee which is just above the Hollywood sign. Here is a picture of an LAPD helicopter keeping an eye of the sign. its pretty cool because i was standing on a mountain peak looking down on the flying helicopter!

My new training watch!

It is a suunto t3d. It's supposedly a much more accurate and reliable heartrate monitor than what I had before. But it also does training effect and has a stopwatch Which I've been needing badly. It looks pretty sweet!

August 2008 Mountaineering Trip with Keith and Matt

Here are me, matt, and keith at the trail head begging our trip. Note how keith has no pack. It didnt arrive at the airport on time, so we had to spend the first night in the mountains without some stuff(his tent, sleeping bag, etc.) That was a nice cozy night in my tent the first night. hahaha

This is the bear that matt and i ran into on the trail. We took some bad pictures of us posing with the bear. The bear started getting uncomfortable and gave us a loud snort/growl, and we decided to get the hell out of there. Only later did it occour to us that the bear could a been a cub... It was pretty small...

This amazing picture was taken with my Cannon SD990 IS of the night sky in coolorados wilderness. Click on it to enlarge and really see how amazing this little point and shoot camera is! and how wild the stars out there are.

August 2008 Mountaineering Trip with Keith and Matt

Night 1 colorado trip.

we arrived in aspen, but keiths pack got on a later flight, so we had to head into the wilderness for a rough night without it.
Me, matt and keith crammed into the 3 person tent with all our gear. I gave keith my sleeping bag to stay warm on his first night in colorado.-it was a cold and sleepless night.-my heart was pounding all night from the altitude and exhaustion, Matt had some altitude sickness and a mixture of the flu. Keith slept fine haha.

Day 2 of Colorado trip

We hiked back into aspen to pick up keiths pack at the airport.
On one of the busses in aspen there was a crazy lady talking about who she was going to kill... Her eyes were going al over the place and she had this stroller full of crap and she got crazy angy at it on the buss and attacked it next to me keith and matt...( I pretented to look asleep, keith looked bewildered, and matt tryed to ignore her and talk to me about random stuff haha). When she first got on the Bus, she looks at the bus driver and says “Just two more days of this!!!”. When she got off the bus, the driver asked who the hell was she? Hahaha.

On the way back to basecamp I looked to the right and saw something. As soon as I realized what it was, matt had just said 'Bear'. the bear was about 20 yards from us off to the right. We stopped and took some pictures of us with the black/brown bear behind us. Within about :15 seconds of stopping though, the bear got a little uncomfortable with us right there, and gave us a really clear 'Snort' to leave.
We didn't even put anything away. We just grabbed our shit and walked away at a good clip till we determened it wasn't going after us...
We aren't sure if it was a young bear or potentially a larger cub. Once this thought crossed our minds, we decided to get the hell out of there.

After basecamp was set up-we were preparing for dinner. We were filtering water down by the lake. Keith has a water bottle with some old water in it from back when we were packing... I told keith to empty the water bottle so we wouldn't mix the old dirty water(which probably had stuff growing in it by this time since it wasn't dried well) with the new clean water we were about to pump into it.

so... To empty this water bottle, keith chugs its reminants in order to remove the dirty water to keep it from contaminating the new water we were gonna pump in... Hahahaha completely defeats the purpose.

The night before we were going to attempt the summit the maroon bells before sunrise Matt said that I was talking in my sleep a lot...all I was saying was 'are you ready' 'are you ready' over and over again. When we got up that morning, it was raining, so we called it off and climbed buckskin peak instead.

Day 3

Bad weather. Rest day.

Day 4- Henry and Matts Maroon Bells Epic Adventure

Too excited/Nervous to sleep the night before. Fell asleep at midnight, and got up at 3am to begin. ~2am there was a bear really near our tent in a tree... The bear totally fell out and broke all branches on the way down…as well as porcupines all night… I slept about 2 hours that night.

Me, matt, and keith headed out, hiking into the dark. We were pushing a very quick pace so we would spend the least amount of time in the low valley as possible. When we turned out of the valley to begin the direct ascent of maroon bell south, keith got pretty uncomfortable with the situation, so we sent keith off on his own solo day hike over west maroon pass and frigid air pass. This turned out to be a very good decision later. We waited for civil twilight to begin before parting ways. Matt and I Made good time up to the ridge line... Eventually we got to the summit at like 11am and it took us 6 hours! Really fast… Especially after the minor problems we had in the morning. Once we summated is when the adventure really began.

Upon arriving on the summit matt and I were the first up there by hours.. We called our loved ones and took pictures. We had 1 liter of water left in our Water bottles at the summit(a bit low even for just decent) and the tubes to our water bladders froze solid, so we couldn't drink from them. We were promptly greeted by 3 mountain goats. It was a dominant male, a female, and a young one. The male started getting aggressive with us and took the summit of the mountain. We had to run away at first(they have big sharp horns and are a very powerful animal) because they were trying to defend their baby and we didn’t want them to attack us. The only problem was that when we got on the peak, we put our packs with critical gear down, and they chased us off so quickly that we didn’t have time to grab our gear. We waited for about half and hour before coming to the conclusion that they were going to leave before us and we needed our gear back. We were getting cold and needed to start heading back. We made a plan on how to make our attack, and to only attack the aggressive male. We knew if we attacked the baby or female, the aggressive male would be forced to attack us to defend them. We also knew that Mountain goats are prey animals, and therefore if we could attack with enough ferocity to trigger the flee instinct in him, the others would follow as well. Below is a video of the mountain goats just before they made there offensive and took the peak.

Matt and I Charged the dominant male goat on the summit. We came running over the side of a ridge directly towards the summit throwing large rocks(the only weapons we had) and screaming and yelling at them at the top of our lungs various profanities to make ourselves ‘feel’ more scary. This is much harder than it sounds. First of all, doing anything at 14,000+ feet altitude is hard. Breathing is hard, let alone, running and yelling at max intensity while trying to throw large rocks. Also, we were running on loose terrain with 4,000 foot drops on every side of us. One slip and we break our ankle and never make it back down, or worse, slip and make it back down via falling off a 4,000 foot cliff. --- We kept throwing the rocks and screaming and charging, but the mountain goat just stood his ground. All my shots were missing and matts were beginning to hit the target. We got closer, the goat still didn’t move. Now we are charging a very powerful mountain goat with far better footing than us, who could easily impale us with his horns and throw us off the side of the mountain. Charging them felt like I was running onto a battle field and being shot at. It was a full on adrenalin rush. The goat finally got within about arms length of us! It turned and ran! My shots started hitting their target, and I knew we had won. The goat kept running and the others followed. I stopped running and leaned over. I thought I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen and intense adrenaline still flowing through my veins. We grabbed our gear and got the hell out of there. We did not want to have to do that again. The feeling of self empowerment, knowing we both just won a fight against a larger more powerful animal was amazing. At that point I thought, wow, im glad its all over and I can go home. Little did we know, what lied ahead of us.

On the decent, we kept getting lost....for hours and hours...we were already very tired from the summiting and then fight with goats. All the cairns(which are the little piles of rocks we use to find our way since there is no trail) on bell south have been messed with and they all kept leading us to class 5 areas with no protection, loose rock, and deadly exposure..At this point wind picked up to about 60mph..We were getting very tired and thirsty..The situation was beginning to get very dangerous. We kept making more and more mistakes, slipping and sliding on cliff edges. we could not get our bearings out there because all the cairns were misleading... For about 6 hours of intensive climbing up and down steep cliours and dangerous large steep and loose rock fields we searched for a way off the mountain that didn't turn into a suicidal cliff to get us back to crater lake... We were loosing lots of coordination in our hands and feet, and our speech was slurring and we were deeply exhausted. At this point we had been searching for a way off the ridge in high wind and are beginning to find ourselves in an increasingly serious situation.. We were becoming severely dehydrated since we ran out of water hours ago. We needed electrolytes. Our bodies and been strained for far too long at this point and we had spent too much time at high altitude.

We had reached our thresholds of what our bodies could take. We just wanted to be give up. Staying conscious was a real struggle, even after we would stop and rest. It felt like no matter what we tried, we would never get home. At that very moment, I felt true desperation. I felt helpless. It felt horrible. Then we both finally reached a turning point and went onto survival mode. I found some water on the mountain and started filling my water bottle with it. I knew it had giardia(an intestinal parasite and was not safe to drink) in it, but I also knew I needed water right then. Giardia takes 7 days before it makes you sick. I would be home by then. We eventually came to the conclusion that we weren’t going to find the normal trail back down, so we decided we were just going to figure out a different way off the mountain into a different valley. We knew that staying the night high on the mountain ridge would kill us, so we decided to get lower down and just spend the night in a valley at the base of the mountain. We figured that we could survive there no problem out in the wilderness if needed, and then just hike back to our campsite the next day. As we started descending down the mountain face, we saw somebody above us. We called out to them. When we all got together they told us that they were lost and following us. Shit. But at least they weren’t nearly as tired or dehydrated as us. It felt like such a relief to see another person! Our spirits instantly lifted! They gave me some of their water so I didn’t have to drink the bad water I found. Turns out their water was infected anyways. We all worked together and eventually found the correct route off the mountain ridge. From there we knew we were going to make it home. All we had to do now was descend down the not as steep sloping face of the mountain and into the valley, where we would hike down back to our campsite.

As we were going down the sloping face of the mountain and out of danger, my emotions would run wild. One minute I would be laughing about how ridiculous this was, and then half crying for no apparent reason. We were so happy to be off that damn misleading and mismarked ridge. When we finally got into the valley, our quads were burning in pain. It’s a 2,000 foot vertical decent into the valley and its all on the quads. When we walked, it felt like we were floating. We didn’t know if were even going to be able to walk back to the campsite without fainting. Ive fainted enough times before to know what it feels like, and I can say from experience that the whole walk back(about 4 miles on rocky rough terrain) felt like I was just on that edge of fainting. Everything felt instantly like an old memory. The feeling of “now” disappeared. We had to stop a few times, but eventually made it back to camp. We filtered 2 liters of water and made some potent Gatorade and drank the whole thing right away. Keith, who had already been back for hours, looked at us and though what the hell happened to you guys?! My body had gone into pure survival mode, and was staying conscious and alive by adrenaline only...

I ate 400 calories on the mountain and burned about 20,000 calories... I weighed 20 lighter when I got back, because I burned some fat and was truly severely dehydrated.... Once I got back safe, the adrenaline died off and my body temp dropped completely.. After drinking the Gatorade my heart rate went back to a normal rhythm and I felt the life of me flowing back into my body very slowly. We had covered of 14,500 vertical feet instead of 4,000 for Maroon Peak...

We took 16 hours instead of 8 hours. And 7 days later back at home, I got Guardia (it was no fun, but nothing compared to what I had already been through on the bells.).

The last few Days of trip.

The next day was a total rest day. We just slept the entire day. Then the following day, we hiked into aspen and found an awesome outdoor hot tub behind a hotel with a bar. We ordered drinks and and chilled in the outdoor hot tub that was the size of a swimming pool and reflected on what happened and how to never let it happen again. We pretty much chilled there all day. That night we we caught the last bus to the airport and camped out there till morning to catch an early flight out home.

After Walking from base camp back to Aspen(~10miles with big packs on), we camped out in front of the airport to catch the first flight out when the airport opened. It was awesome. Ive never slept outside in front of an airport before and had to watch for bears at the same time.

Getting my pilots license was a very challenging experience simply because i could only do it in the summer and it was very hard. I feel like a really earned that license and and proud of my accomplishment. I didnt get my license for any reason other than simply to see if i could do it. To see what it was like, and to be empowered knowing i could actually fly airplanes. I took on a major challenge, and through hard work and dedication, i achieved my goal.

Winter Break 2007 - Mexico with the family

Here is the view from my balcony. Most amazing beach house of all time! It was like 80* + water and 85*F air temperature. So nice. One night i actually slept out in the hammock in our backyard/beach. it was so nice and so amazing!

There were also Large iguanas everywhere like squirrels or something! It was amazing. If you can see near the horizon of this image, there were some decent waves. It was pretty nice. I went out there i a kayak and went surfing! the 1st try it worked. the 2nd try, i got tipped sidways, and slammed into a very hard and sharp coral reef. Some of my clothes got ripped off, and i lost my hat. But i managed to get my boat and kayak and paddle, and get back on it in the waves without totally killing myself. I tried again and was able to ride the wave almost all the way back to shore. I felt satisfied and quite before i actually got killed on a reef. So much fun though.

Another cool Adventure i had wile in was in Akumal was scuba diving! I had never been scuba diving before. It was incredible! We swam down about 50 feet or so below the surface. There were tropical reefs and fish! It was like watching the shows on discovery channel, in HD where they are swimming through the colorfull reefs and can reach out at play with all the crazy color fish! It was amazing, and yes everything really is that colorful in real life! It was so amazing, it was like flying through the water. you could literally reach out and tough the amazing reefs and fish in front of you! The only down side was that i ran out of air 50 feet below the surface. There was a pretty tense moment there when i signaled i was totally out of oxygen, and suddenly didnt have enough to make it to the surface, so i held on the the guy next to me and we shared eachothers air so we could stay under for another :15 minutes before ascending to the surface again. It was really cool and i plan on doing it again(minus the running out of air part).
